The International Day of Victims of the Enforced Disappearance

The General Assembly of the United Nations has decided to declare 30 August as the International Day of Victims of the Enforced Disappearance as of 2011, and in the same resolution the General Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of Persons from Enforced Disappearance;
The Enforced disappearance has become a serious crime against the Egyptian society.
For more than five years, enforced disappearance has become a systematic and a continuous crime committed by the Egyptian regime against its political opponents, with a total of 6,000 people who have been forcibly or involuntarily disappeared in the last five years.
This phenomenon was once the product of military dictatorships, and their re-production under the development of modern regimes and democracy is unacceptable at the current time.
It is a matter of general concern that the crime has become a multi-hazard effect and not only has a negative impact on the victim but also extends to the victim’s family and community, as well as the ongoing impunity for perpetrators of enforced disappearances.
On the occasion of the International Day of Enforced or Involuntary Disappearance, JHR calls for the cessation of the crime of enforced or involuntary disappearance and for stopping all forms of torture and coercion against the victims to force them to confess crimes they didn’t commit. It is necessary to stop the murder of the forcibly disappeared in Egypt,
We also call on the Human Rights Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to establish a fact-finding committee and request a visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt to investigate the situation of the disappeared to stop this crime.
